During the Graduate School of Political Mangement’s (GSPM) Washington Residency Program, students had the privilege of exploring the nation’s capital like insiders. They were enrolled in PMGT 6480: Washington Residency, a two-part semester class consisting of a four-week online course and a one-week onsite program in Washington, D.C.
The Washington Residency program is one of the Capstone choices for students in the Political Management master’s degree program. Students in other Graduate School of Political Management programs are also welcome, as well as graduate students from other GW programs (with permission of the program director).
Students had many unique experiences during the week, including holding meetings at Capitol Hill with the RNC, Teamsters, National Public Radio, and staffers on the Hill.
The sessions also included a visit to the House Floor on Sunday, March 30th a few days before Sen. Cory Booker’s filibuster. Discussing implications and the current political environment now with our speakers at this time was crucial and valuable for these students.
Additional Highlights of the Spring 2025 Washington Residency included:
- Visit and tour at NPR with Ms. Cheryl Thompson, Investigative Reporter, National Public Radio (GW Faculty).
- Meeting in the Capitol Building and learning about work on the Hill and behind the scenes experiences and logistics for Nancy Pelosi’s team during the Jan. 6th riots with Ms. Emily Berret, Senior Advisor to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries Leader’s Office
- Touring the Pentagon and the correspondents’ corridor with Ms. Nancy Youssef, Pentagon Correspondent, Wall Street Journal.
- Touring the Capitol Building after hours and visiting Statuary Hall and the House Floor exclusively for our students. Tour with John Lawrence, former Chief of Staff to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Such unique experiences are what make studying at GSPM truly special. Our location in Washington, D.C. offers students incredible opportunities to network, learn and gain first-hand insights from the political leaders shaping our country’s future.
“This has truly been the best residency I’ve ever been a part of. Every speaker brought a wealth of knowledge, yet remained incredibly down-to-earth and relatable. I’ve definitely caught the ‘political bug’—this experience has deepened my passion for public service and policy. The program coordinators were awesome and made us feel genuinely welcomed. The group dynamic was so cohesive, which made the entire experience even more impactful. I’m leaving this residency more inspired, informed and connected than ever.”
