During our recent healthcare compliance webinar, an engaging group of panelists shared their experiences as compliance professionals navigating the pandemic.
Panelists participating in the November 11 virtual event, “Navigating Compliance During a Pandemic,” included a current student, alumni, and faculty from the George Washington University’s Healthcare Corporate Compliance Program. They shared information about their current roles and recent experiences within their organizations navigating COVID-19, as well as strategies for success.
“We were pleased to highlight the experience of a current student and alumni who are navigating compliance through a pandemic. The panel discussion reflected the critical importance of compliance professionals and the relevance and timeliness of GW’s Healthcare Corporate Compliance Program,” said Jane Hyatt Thorpe, J.D., program director of the GW Healthcare Corporate Compliance Program.
Panelists included:
Gordon Matthews, MBA, Senior Director of Contracting at Beaumont Health, an eight-hospital 3,500-bed healthcare provider and Michigan’s largest hospital system. In this role, he oversees all of supply chain contracting for medsurg and clinical products, physician preference items, facilities and construction, purchased services and capital.
Larry Justice, the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for Graham Healthcare Group. He has over 20 years of experience in legal practice, including providing a full range of legal services to a number of different healthcare providers, including hospitals, physician groups, home health and hospice providers, and affiliated medical providers.
Jennifer Flugaur, MBA, BSN, RN, CPHQ, the VP of Clinical Excellence at Agrace HospiceCare, a non-profit, community-based health care organization serving southern Wisconsin residents. In her role, she serves as the Compliance Officer, Privacy Officer, and oversees other clinical support departments to include Quality, Clinical Education and Infection Prevention. She is also an alumna of GW’s Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Corporate Compliance.
Dianne K. Pledgie, a Partner and Compliance Counsel with Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell LLP Health Law practice group. Dianne advises health centers on implementing effective compliance programs and addressing top compliance risk areas. She is also a faculty member in GW’s HCC program.
The discussion was moderated by Jane Hyatt Thorpe, Director, GW Healthcare Corporate Compliance Program and Senior Associate Dean for Academic, Student & Faculty Affairs and Professor of Health Policy and Management in the GW Milken Institute School of Public Health.
One of the themes echoed by multiple panelists during the webinar was that compliance professionals are navigating the new normal – and trying to understand what that means for the industry. Everyone has been adjusting to the safety and quality issues brought on by the pandemic. The industry is re-evaluating best practices for delivering quality patient care in an increasingly virtual world, including how that is regulated and evaluated.
