Event Recap: The Conduct of Cyber-Enabled Information Operations

During the Sept. 17, 2020 virtual event, a distinguished panel of experts discussed a fictitious, but realistic video scenario. A terrorist group working with sophisticated, international hackers launched a multi-faceted cyber campaign aimed at undermining western democratic principles and election security. They examined the challenges in the scenario, such as deception, cyberspace operations, election tampering, social media and related issues, as well as how to deter and counter them to maintain national and global security. Hosted by the Cybersecurity Strategy and Information Management program at GW/CPS, in partnership with CSFI and the Economic and Trade office at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Washington Post Article Highlights CPS Cybersecurity Program

CPS’s Connie Peterson Uthoff, associate program director of the Cybersecurity Strategy & Information Management master’s degree program, was quoted in the October 17 Washington Post Express story, “Defenders of the Web,” written by Beth Luberecki. The article, written during National Cybersecurity Month, had a few major takeaways, one of them being that “in today’s cybersecurity degree programs, it’s not just about graduating engineers.” The article underscores the plentiful opportunities for students interested in careers in the cyber arena, the more technical coders and hackers, as well as those who make policy, legal and business decisions using an understanding of cybersecurity.

Students Learn the Importance of Public-Private Partnerships in National Security Efforts

GW graduate students learned about national security issues in a new way by hearing the perspectives of professionals currently working in this specialized field. A team of five presenters from Guidehouse (formerly PwC Public Sector), a leading government consulting firm, lead a discussion on how private-public partnerships strengthen our country’s national security efforts with students in the Homeland Security and Cyber Security Strategy and Information Management master’s degree programs.
