GW’s Virginia Science & Technology Campus in Ashburn, VA hosted the Nova Data Science Meetup group’s event January 19, 2017 about “Cognitive Computing: At the Cross-roads of Data Science and Natural Language Processing.”

The Nova Data Science Meetup group holds meetings for anyone interested in discussing data science topics. The recent event focused on breakthroughs in cognitive computing related to intelligent machines that can communicate with people using natural language and can understand and learn from books, reports, and TV, a scenario that has long been depicted in science fiction. It was the first in a series of events GW will host on campus for the Meetup group.

The Meetup provided an overview of Cognitive Computing presented by Frank Stein, Certified Analytics Professional and Director of the IBM Analytics Solution Center, and then Mona Diab, an Associate Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science at the George Washington University, dove into Statistical Natural Language Processing (NLP), aka Computational Linguistics.
