Join us to hear from professionals who have made successful pivots into the publishing sector from a related field, and transitioned from one aspect to another within publishing. Learn how to leverage your experience and strengths from related fields, communicate your valuable skills to employers, and broaden your horizons about the variety of publishing careers—especially those that may be overlooked by those outside the industry.
Nicole Mintz, Career Services Director, CPS, and John W. Warren, Director and Professor, MPS in Publishing, will be joined by Publishing program alumni Shaina Lange (MPS, 2016) and Shannon O'Reilly (MPS, 2000), who will discuss their career transitions into and within publishing sectors.
- Shaina Lange, MPS - Senior Publications Ethics Manager, American Chemical Society: Shaina Lange is a publishing professional dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion and improving trust in scholarly communications. Shaina joined the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2015 and ACS Publications' Publishing Integrity Office in 2020. She currently leads key initiatives for the journals program around diversity and inclusion, as well as ethics policy, case management, and education. In her previous role, she led editorial analytics efforts for nearly 80 ACS journals to monitor performance and support data-driven editorial, marketing, and product development strategies. Shaina holds a Master's of Professional Studies in Publishing from the George Washington University, a Bachelor of Arts in English from Bucknell University, and is currently obtaining a Diversity & Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University. Prior to the ACS, Shaina worked in non-profit book publishing following several years in the special events industry.
- Shannon O’Reilly, MPS - Digital Publishing & Rights Manager, Georgetown University Press: Shannon O’Reilly is the Digital Publishing & Rights Manager at Georgetown University Press. Previously, she served as the Senior Global Outreach Manager in the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS). She hosted professional development events at universities around the world to help authors and early career researchers get published and maximize their research. Prior to ACS, Shannon worked for PBS corporate in their publicity department and free-lanced for local DC publications. - John Warren: John is Director and Professor of the MPS in Publishing program, College of Professional Studies. He has more than 25 years of senior management experience in publishing, having led groundbreaking initiatives in digital content development and distribution, including eBooks, short-form digital content, enhanced eBooks and websites, open access journals and open educational resources.
- Nicole Mintz: Nicole is a Career Coach who specializes in executive leadership development coaching. She currently serves as the Director of Career Services for GW's College of Professional Studies.
